简介：
    这种艇型是在1935-1936年作为一种远洋潜艇设计建造的，同时又是从IA级艇改进而来，其作战下潜深度为100米，最大下潜深度为200米，并在吃水线以下安装有6具鱼雷发射管（艇首4具，艇尾2具），共可携带鱼雷22枚。该型艇具有与VIIC型艇类似的水上飞机和方向舵，艇内的控制室和指挥塔围壳内则分别安装有1部和2部潜望镜，但从IXC型艇开始取消了上述设计。
      IX型艇具有5个外部鱼雷舱（其中2个位于艇首，3个位于艇尾），可额外存储10枚鱼雷。执行布雷任务时，该艇可携带TMA型水雷44枚或TMB型水雷66枚，但实际上多数IXC型艇并不适合执行布雷任务。该艇装备一门105毫米甲板炮，备弹110发，其防空武器的配置在大战期间则不尽相同。

      生产出来的119艘潜艇中，有113艘投入了使用。大战爆发之前，Walter和Germania Werft博士致力于一项通过对海水进行氧化处理以使潜艇发动机可以不依赖空气中的氧气工作的课题研究，这样一来潜艇就不需要频繁浮出水面。在实验艇XVII和XVIII建造完成后，许多项目都得以完成。然而该艇仍然得不到批量生产，事实上，三个重大缺陷已经暴露出来：
一艘XVIII型潜艇的造价，可建两艘VIIC型潜艇
对储水箱的性能所做的改进设计耗费太大
为了得到足够这些潜艇使用的氧化海水，需要做燃料的更新生产（这是当时世界科技能造的最强的船）

于是实验艇XVIII转而使用柴油发动机，这就产生了XXI型潜艇——在当时仍属先进的潜艇。它具备在那个时代显得极为惊人的水下航速，其精良的装备使得该艇可以无须接近海面即可发现并攻击目标。此外，它的鱼雷水压装填系统可在12分钟内装填6枚鱼雷！而在一艘典型的VIIC型潜艇上，需要10到20分钟才能装填一枚鱼雷。该型潜艇的另一个新颖之处在于它的建造方式，整个艇体分为9段在不同的工厂建造，然后在3个船坞内进行最后的合并总装，这样一来极大的缩短了建造周期。但是VII型潜艇的出现太晚了，它无法改变历史。该型艇首艇于1944年5月12日下水，6月27日正式服役。两艘XXI型潜艇被派往加勒比海执行任务：Schnee的U - 2511号与Manseck的U - 3001号。其中U - 2511号违抗了命令并成功接近英国皇家海军诺福克号驱逐舰，在成功发射鱼雷后未被发现从而逃脱，战争结束后，这两艘XXI型潜艇得以返回母港。
